Anniversary Hunt

This August we acknowledge our second anniversary of selling beer in Chicago.
A lot has changed, but we’ve steadily focused on having a lot of fun being part of this experiment.

The capsule is out there so maybe take a trip and find it. We'll give you free beer if you bring it back to us.

Remember to call, text or email to announce that you’ve found it so we can call off the folks running around the city in hopes of doing the same.

Your clue:

"Why did they name it so, no one seems to know. The asphalt gives way and the earth slopes down into the current. Leaves hide the capsule. Watch your step."

Good Luck.

Happy Anniversary Gabriel! Have a great weekend

Anyone find it yet?

Unknown said...

...because we're some of those folks still running around the city trying to find it.

No one has found the capsule. Was hoping to stump you. It waits.

So no capsule where we thought it would be. Sure it's still there?

Gabriel said...

I can't be certain it's still there, but unless one was looking it wouldn't be found.

We've been looking...hard...several times...will try again though.

Okay, I realize that:

1. it's raining.
2. you most likely have better things to be doing at 9am on a monday.
3. i most likely have better things to be doing at 9am on a monday.

but...my work concentration is nil waiting and wondering if the capsule is, in fact, still in it's hiding place. we've searched all over what seems to be the right place and not knowing if it's still there is absolutely killing me! i'll provide the ponchos if you go out and check...

All I can say is that no one has contacted us saying they found the capsule. It's out there under the rain with everything else.

i will be VERY interested to find out where it is. i'm pretty sure i had the spot(s) down, but couldn't find anything. and then went to a bar that wasn't carrying half acre, so a double whammy.

The fact this is still out there kills me, usually I can't hunt because of when it gets placed. This one has been out there over a weekend, but I can't think of a single place that I don't know why it was named!

I apologize if this has been answered in previous weeks, but are there any official rules/boundaries for the location? Can we assume it's in Chicago and doesn't require jumping fences and such?

Gabriel said...

There are no rules, but we stick to Chicago and don't make you do anything we wouldn't do. We might jump fences, but not in a way that we'd get arrested or you arrested. Other than that - all is fair in love and war, or whatever they say.

I've even contacted WTTW's Geoffrey Baer to see if he can crack this one. Still waiting (not expecting) a response....

What are the odds that there are two places in Chicago of unknown name origin that both have asphalt giving way to the sloping earth ending in the current?

Pretty good apparently as I've just returned from a trek to such a place without a capsule as my reward.

Hoping this goes on through next week as I'm headed out of town tomorrow.

I'm calling off my search party for this one...unless there is another hint. I spent about 2 hours riding in the rain yesterday. All I found were “bum dens” full of garbage and needles. No capsule. Still had fun searching. Looking forward to the next hunt.

James C,

Would you mind mentioning where it was that you DIDN'T find it, so anyone else who's interested can avoid wasting time checking there (and instead, perhaps, spend that time drinking our favorite beer)?

can i get a description of the capsule? size of a keychain? cellphone? bigger? my boyfriend took me out looking yesterday, but told me we were looking for a disk. i was picturing a dinner plate size frisbee type thing.

The capsule is approx. 3" round and 1" deep. It's tin and has Half Acre spelled out on the lid.

If anyone would like to team up to find the capsule, email me at chicagomn99@gmail.com

Jacob Park is where I headed after scouring my Chicago map. After reading the description of this park (below) that sits along the Chicago River I thought I should definitely check it out. When I arrived, there was a conspicuous hole in the western fence that if you crawled through sloped down a slight hill to the river. This place is described by the clue too perfectly AND it's not too far of a jog from Half Acre. I looked high and low for the capsule, but, but I've been assured that I wasn't even close to where the capsule hides. Glad it's still hidden as I resume my search today.

From the Park District Website:

"Although long known as Jacob Park, the name may have resulted from a clerical mistake. It was originally listed as Virginia Park, but in the early 1930s, it became known by area residents as Jaeger Park in honor of Otto Jaeger a member of the Ravenswood Manor Garden Park District board from 1922 to 1934. As there is no record of the name change from Jaeger to Jacob Park, it seems likely a recording error was made during the administrative transfer to the Chicago Park District ."

that's where i looked too!!! the thing is, the clue doesn't point to a very specific place; if it's beyond the fence, it could be anywhere in those trees between the park and the river. i've searched high and low there 3 different times and have not seen it. i was hoping i was wrong and there is a place with a more definitive hiding place...but i've given up and resorted to just drinking beer.

I looked around Wolf Point yesterday (this is where the river splits into the north and south branches - it's the patch of land where the parking lot below the Holiday Inn sits, just west of Merch Mart). Origins of name are unknown according to some light internet research.

In any case, no capsule to be found - just an amused Holiday Inn maintenance worker wondering why I was jumping the fence to get down to the river.

Hey James C.

You asked...

>>Pretty good apparently as I've >>just returned from a trek to such >>a place without a capsule as my >>reward.

It's true there are two places. The east bank and the west bank of the Chicago river at Agatite. :)
