Opera Matic

Half Acre is sponsoring The Masked Winter Ball & Opera-Matic this weekend.

Opera-Matic was founded by Mark Messing, who also created the punk rock marching band Mucca Pazza, to develop a collective of incredibly talented  Chicago creators to bring musical-theatrical works to public spaces with a focus on sustainability design and reuse.

The Masked Winter Ball is a celebration of winter and community as well as a benefit for Opera-Matic.  It is going to be held Saturday January 30th.  Here's a link to information on the ball.

This is going to interesting, and what's better than interesting?

Hope to see you there.

Celebrity Sausage

There were some real deserving candidates for this Sausage.  A lot of Passionate folks.  After serious scrutiny we chose Eric Hodek (pictured above).  This gentlemen has experience in the field and a real zest for encased meats.  Congrats to Eric Hodek.

We did want to make mention of some of the people that also had real chops, but lost out because we could only choose one to hog the glory.  We also wanted to point out that most people who threw their hat in the ring, threw it out on behalf of another. Beer and hot dogs attracts a very altruistic bunch, so here's to you. You're all stars.

David W. Skrzyniarz "Chile The Great"

Doug Anderson "The Fancy Nancy"

The Celebrity

As you know (see post) Baume' comes out tomorrow in growler format and will only be pouring at the brewery, so stop by to fill up.....  Bottles and draft to follow around the city.

In honor, and to celebrate with our friends from Hot Doug's, they've been serving a bacon and cheddar Elk Sausage with Half Acre Beer(Daisy Cutter) mustard and Moutardier cheese, all week and through Saturday.

Half Acre will also be naming next week's celebrity sausage, and that's where you come in.  You guys are the power that keeps this train moving, so enough about us......what about you?  All you have to do is tell us why you should be the Celebrity Sausage and you just might be the celebrity sausage.  Top notch at amazing feats?  Awkward in every way possible? Superhuman at the totally mundane?  Tell us, you're a star.....go ahead.

Winner, chosen by us, gets to either name the sausage after themselves or use the power for another.

Submit by Saturday morning by either commenting on this post or emailing us at info@halfacrebeer.com

You're going to be famous.

Kegs

We sell both 15.5 gallon & 5 gallon kegs at our brewery store. You guys can come right to us and pick up keg beers from our regular lineup, and also get kegs of special release beers that may only be available at the brewery. Everybody loves parties and no better way to spend time with friends than drinking fresh, draft beer at your home. A kegerator is a quality addition to any household.  Believe This.

(We recommend calling to reserve a keg first in order to guarantee the specific beer you're trying to get your hands on)

**We will be starting a program for special release beers that will allow people to pre order 5 gal. kegs. Give a call if interested.

Baume'

We've brewed Baume' again this year.  Maybe you got the chance to try it last year, it was the first beer we brewed in our brewery.  So, each year we'll brew it again to commemorate that brew and thank a lot of people that help to make Half Acre a bitchin' thing to be part of.

Like last year, Baume' is a chocolate rye stout with a generous hop allotment.  This year will be a little bigger and a little hoppier.  Either way, you can bank on some big chocolate in this beer and a solid, dry finish.

Our goal is to release it at the brewery next Friday 1/22.  Growler pours will be first followed by a 22oz release.  Baume' will also be available out in the world, as well.  So be sure to keep an eye out. We hope you get the chance to try this beer.

Travels

Half Acre merch & beer has been getting around lately.

John Golden was seen on the Discovery Channel with a Half Acre shirt as he was climbing Mt. Everest.  I think that's a record for most miles traveled and an obvious elevation record.  We're still trying to get a photo of this.

Another faithful Half Acre fan recently took a trip to Salvador da Bahia, Brazil.  He brought some bombers of beer and apparently our brazilian brethren enjoyed them.

And I always throw in the Coolio shot when possible.

So, if you're traveling around and get a great shot of you or anyone in an exotic land with Half Acre gear.... send it to us, we'd like to show you off.

The Empty Sea

The Empty Sea, an Orange Chicory Rye Beer, drops today.  We're tapping it here at 2:00, so growlers will be available for purchase at that time.  This beer will only be available at the brewery, in growler format.  It's a special run beer, so it won't last long.

A little about the beer:

Conceptualized and formulated by Half Acre Troubadour, Michael Carroll, this beer strays from the average.  Lively citrus rises from loads of fresh peals, knocking out a seemingly bigger hop edge.  The Chicory saves the beer from being one dimensional adding a complex curve ball while the rye nails down a drier finish. A double take beer, for sure.

Open till 8:00 tonight.

10 FOR 10

The holidays are over and the year 2009 is done. We’re filled with piss and vinegar, and can’t wait to get all over this new decade. 10 things to look forward to in 2010:

1. This April Chicago hosts the Craft Brewers Conference and World Beer Cup. Practically every craft brewer on the globe will descend on our city. This should prove to be a milestone for our city, and a great opportunity to take part in a huge array of events all over Chicago.

2. Winter. We weren’t going to say anything, but one of us here at Half Acre knows somebody who knows somebody and we had our entire climate structure altered. Yup, you heard it right. This winter will be absolutely soul crushing, but for next year and the following 100 we have it in writing that the temperature won’t dip below 40 degrees. An extended Fall, if you will. I’m sure you’ll find a way to thank us.

3. Special Release beers. We’ve been aggressive about brewing new and different beers in an effort to push ourselves as much as possible. You can expect to see a bunch of funky brews.

4. Traffic. Don’t know about you, but we noticed some problem areas where it’s been tough to get from one part of the city to the other. A real drag, we know. So, we petitioned the city and they will slowly start to revoke half the drivers licenses in Chicago over the course of the next year. You’re probably thinking “Son of a…… I need my license,” but don’t worry, they won’t take your license – just your friends.

5. Collaboration beers. We’re gearing up to brew with friends in the coming months. More to follow on all that, but you can expect to see us throwing down with others.

6. Ponies. Nothing says living is good like a Shetland Pony. We looked into the idea, and in a stroke in civic altruism we ordered multiple truckloads of Shetlands to be released into the wild of Chicago. So, if you see one trying to nose his way into your garbage, just smile and take in the beauty of mother nature’s genetically altered friend.

7. We’ve hired a dedicated brand champion to be out on the streets preaching the gospel of Half Acre. This will allow us to get our beer into more bars, take part in, and create more events that we all can enjoy.

8. Chunky thighs. Don’t know about you, but we’re not as young as we used to be and the beers just seem to slide down in an ever-easier fashion. Maybe you’ve looked to exercise to keep the girth down, but come late 2010 we’ll be launching a new non-profit in the back of the brewery called, “Cheese Chug”. Cheese Chug is revolutionary process developed by a brewer that actually removes all of your excess body fat in about an hour. Amazing.

9. It’s bad form to count your chickens before they hatch, but we’re doing our best to get a full-scale canning line into the brewery in short order. It’s shaping up to be a reality, but don’t get pissed if it takes a while. We’re working on it.

10. Fun. 2010 is going to be a good time. There’s a lot of interesting things going on in our city. Here’s to getting out there and seeing what's going on.

Cheers,
